The Top Twelve Threats that No Computer User Should Ignore..

The Top Twelve Threats No Computer User Should Ignore

The internet is undoubtedly a fantastic resource for
families and offers a rich source of educational content.
However, there are potential dangers - welcome to the
dreadful world of viruses, spam, trojans, spyware
and other nasties.

Here are the Top Twelve Threats No Computer User Should
Ignore:

1. Viruses - A computer program that copies itself. They
often disrupt your computer system or damage your data.
Viruses are usually received by email attachments so be
careful opening anything from a dubious source. They can
affect anyone, for example, the destructive Mydoom worm
affected one out of three small and mid-sized businesses.

2. Spyware - Sends information about you and your computer
to somebody else. Spyware may send the addresses of sites
you have visited or worse still, transmit personal
information. With today's concerns about identify theft
this is a real worry. For example, CoolWebSearch may hijack
web searches, home page, and other Internet Explorer
settings. Spyware is normally received as part of shareware
or freeware downloaded from the web.

3. IP Spoofing - A technique to gain unauthorized access
to computers, whereby the intruder sends messages to a
computer with an address indicating that the message is
coming from a trusted host.

4. Trojans - An apparently legitimate computer program
that is really intended to disrupt and damage computer
activity by sending information, perhaps even passwords
onto a third party without you knowing. As an example,
recent emails entitled "Osama Bin Laden Captured" attempted
to download the "Trj/Small.B." Trojan if the embedded URL
was clicked. This trojan attempts to hijack the PC.

5. Spam - Unsolicited mail often promoting products of a
dubious financial or sexual nature. Don't leave your email
address on websites and internet bulletin boards as they
are harvested by spammers.

6. Adware - puts advertisements on your screen. These take
many forms including popups, popunders and advertisements
that appear later, even if your browser is closed. Some are
sent using the Windows Messenger service which allows a
spammer to direct an advertisement straight to your
computer by sequentially sending messages to IP addresses.
Always irritating, they are also often of a bad
nature.

7. Diallers - for those of us still with dial up modems,
dialler programs redirect calls to a very expensive number.
You won't know until you get the bill.

8. Hijackers - Hijackers take control of your web browser
and may reset your home page, search bar and search pages.
They can redirect you to undesirable sites or stop you
going to particular sites.

9. Hackers - With so much personal data available online
to anyone with a password you must be sure your password is
secure. If you are using your mother's maiden name, your
cat's name or your birthday then your password is at risk.
Here are two tips for making a secure password. Method One -
pick two random unrelated three letter words and two
digits. Mix them up and what do you have? A secure password
such as "red19cat" or "hotpin73". Method Two - pick a short
sequence of words such as Now Is The Winter Of Our
Discontent Made Glorious' and you have a password of
"nitwoodmg". You could even change the I's and O's to
digits.

10. Phishing - Emails purporting to come from reliable
sources such as Paypal, Ebay or your bank. Often wanting
you to verify your account details, they can look very
realistic but are generally scams to harvest usernames and
passwords. Always open a new browser winder and type the
address there, rather than clicking on the link provided.

11. Hoaxes - Chain letters, scams, false alarms. At best
they take up time and bandwidth but at worst vulnerable can
be victims of fraud. Pass it on!

Fixing windows registry errors

The most important reason your should fix Windows Registry errors as they occur is that this the one single preventative measure can greatly increase the life-expectancy of your Windows system by stabilizing the growth of its Registry.

Prevention is Key!

It is a fact of Windows that trying to fix Registry problems after they occur is much more difficult than preventing their occurrence in the first place. So when it comes to the Windows Registry, the motto should always be "prevention is key!" This is because it is often the most common and abundant types of errors that wind up killing Registries, especially those caused by a system's registered applications, users, and even Windows itself. As new applications are installed and old applications are removed, and as registered applications continue accessing and changing Registry data, they often leave small bits of themselves behind as orphaned registry entries.

By themselves, these errors will probably not reveal themselves in any degradation of speed or normal Windows functions, especially if your system is new. But if these errors are allowed to accumulate for a very long time, they can greatly increase a Registry's size and wreak havoc on the overall structure and stability of its database. And for a fast-growing Registry, even small error accumulations can quickly send your Registry's database structure out of control. If you don't fix these Windows Registry errors often, your system can very easily fall victim to sudden crashes, system stalls, or a severe decrease in operating speed. It is particularly at risk if you frequently install or uninstall applications and hardware, since these actions increase the Registry's rate of growth further by adding more registered components, orphaned Registry entries, and undeleted drivers to your system.

Tips to speed up your pc..Really working..

These days many of us use our computers a lot and they seem to be running slower than it did even last week. What is up? Here's some ways to get back that speed and even improve on it a little and what's really cool is they're easy to do and don't cost anything !

Before we start just make sure you back everything up in case something horrible happens.

1. Clean and organize your hard drive.

Sometimes people just dump a ton of files into the root directory of their hard drive making it unorganised and slow. Use Windows Explorer and create a filing cabinet system of folders and sub folders that makes sense to you so and store your files accordingly. This will also make it easier by the way for anyone else who needs to use your files and find something.

While you're in Windows Explorer look for any 'temp' folders with files inside them ending with .tmp and delete them.

2. Check your hard drive.

While still in Windows Explorer, right click on the C: drive and select Properties. Go to the Tools tab click on the Check Now... button. Tick all the options and click on the Start button. Verify that you want to perform a check after a reboot. Do this for any other hard drive you might have in your computer. Reboot your computer and let the system check the hard drives and fix any issues. This might take some time, so be patient.

3. Clean up Internet Explorer records.

Searching the Internet is a certain cause for putting stuff on your computer that will slow it down. Prior to doing anything with your Internet Explorer, make sure you know the critical data you enter at the websites you visit. You will be clearing the history, and that saved data will be gone. Usually it is not needed, but there might be some things that you have come to depend on, such as passwords, logins etc.

For Internet Explorer, choose Tools... Internet Options. A new window will open. In the Temporary Internet records section, choose to Erase Cookies and OK. Click on Erase Records and OK and then in the History section, click Clear History and Yes. Then choose OK to close the Internet Options.

For Firefox, select Tools ... Options. In the Privacy section, select the Clear All button and Clear All Data. Then select OK to close the Options window.

For other browsers, there ought to be similar settings.

4. Update your anti virus software and anti virus signatures. Keep them up to date. I would suggest setting your anti virus software to automatically update every day. Perform a full anti virus scan on your PC.

5. If you do not have anti-spyware software installed on your system, you definitely need to get one and get one soon. Microsoft has a free one that you can get at their website called Windows Defender and ought be available to download from Microsoft. Make sure you keep your anti-spyware software up to date and keep it up to date.

6. Defragment your hard drives. From your Explorer window, right click on the C: drive and select Properties. Then select the Tools tab and Defragment Now... button. Highlight the C: drive and select the Defragment button. Carry out this operation for each drive in you PC.

Carry out these steps on a routine basis and your computer ought run much better.

Five Great Tips to Save on Printer Ink and Paper in Your Home Office

I have a few ideas about saving ink and paper and am sure that everybody else working in a home office does as well. Here are some of the great and common ideas that home office experts have come up with to save on ink, ink cartridges and paper.

Reduce, reuse
Shop for deals and returns
Try refills
Put four images on one page for draft work
Use all the ink

Do not print everything – Just because there is an image or text on the screen in front of you does not mean that you need to print it. This especially goes for internet pages. An internet page will find ink and ink cartridges working overtime to blend all the colors together for the desired look. If you must print the page use black ink only and save the other three for your presentation drafts.

Reuse/reduce – Just so it’s not left out of the mix, use both sides of the page. You might also find savings in using the legal size paper that you only used 20 sheets of. Mine sat forever until I began using it for drafts. If there is a large presentation coming up think about putting 4-6 printed pages on one page. Ink will go that much farther and since you are really just trying to get a look at how it will look the size shouldn’t matter too much. This will save loads of ink cartridge and paper.

Deals/returns- When you do run out of ink shop at a store that will give you a deal on recycling the ink cartridge. If you are replacing all four ink cartridges at one time there are stores out there that will give you Rs.300, which of course will go toward theRs.1500 or so for new ink cartridges.

Refills – Some swear by refills others do not. If they work for you go for it. Refill Ink is an individual thing and can save some cash so you decide. So try refills as it may make a difference to the overall cost.

Use all the ink The low ink window is like a bell ringing for a dog. The window comes up and a trip to the store is needed right away. Don’t be swayed. There is likely quite a bit of ink left in the ink cartridge. Remember that the ink comes out in a spray so it doesn’t take much. Use it all and then shake the ink cartridge to break any Ink clogs up, especially in humid climes.
There are like many more home office tips and tricks that can be used to save money in the home office. The real trick is to slow down half a step and think about the actions that your hands are making. If you have gotten into a particular habit you could be wasting materials like ink cartridges and ink.
